Forty-five years is hard to cover in just a few short paragraphs, isn't it?

I graduated for the U of Arkansas with a degree in English, then went back for my Master's degree there, as well. I married Jim Hefley while in college and was a "trailing spouse" during his brief stint in the army and a much longer stint with IBM, living in Stamford, CT; Springfield, IL: Little Rock; and Topeka, KS (garden spots all) where we divorced in 1980. Along the way we became parents of two daughters, Joan and Anne.

I put those writing skills learned from Miss Presson to work and taught college writing and literature classes to work, then became an editor in the public relations department of The Menninger Foundation, and later director of public/community relations at the hospital in Lawrence, KS.

In 1989 I married Jack McFadden--a former Marine with a Ph.D., currently working as a consultant with senior executives. After a few years in Lawrence, we moved to Baltimore in 1997. We live in "the city" in a row house built before the Civil War, within walking distance of music, food, theater, art films, and other good things. Along with Jack came two grown children, a son and a daughter, Dan and Chase. Dan is a television news producer, recently promoted to the NBC affiliate in Hartford, CT; Chase is a successful project manager for Verizon Wireless, living in Atlanta.

I went back to teaching English part-time at a small private college about 20 minutes from our home when we moved to Baltimore. This semester, however, I'm taking an unpaid sabbatical and we're doing some traveling--nearby and out of the country, short and long. (Jack has not mentioned the word "retirement.")

Anne lives in our historic neighborhood while she learns to become a writer (her degree is from Parsons in graphic design)--at least one who can support herself with her writing. Joan lives in Atlanta with our six-year-old grandson; she's a flight attendant for Delta Airlines. My Mother lives nearby, as well, in an assisted living facility, so I've got a good bit of my family nearby.

I hope to be with all of you at our 50th!
